The Feminine vs. the Masculine : A Sufi Perspective of Life By Mariam S. Mir

The Feminine vs. the Masculine : A Sufi Perspective of Life  By Mariam S. Mir

We have to unveil and deconstruct the ego in order to integrate and value it in ourselves.
We have to awaken to its essence rather than judging it by its actions.
This is not a psychological endeavor, nor has it much to do with thinking or talking, it is rather experienced in discipline of a spiritual practice.
Deconstructing the ego is what the spiritual path is about; the rest is pretty much commentary.

As Abu Said Ibn Abi Khayr put it:

Until college and minaret have crumbled This holy work of ours will not be done Until faith becomes rejected and rejection becomes belief. There will be no true Muslim. (Abusa'd Abul Kha'ir, 25)

Instead of investing all our energies into questioning whether the male is uniquely culpable by his nature or if he is as prone to error and act in ignorance and self-righteousness as the female half of our human creation, we may be better off to simply acknowledge mistakes, which have caused much suffering, despair and hurt; as testified by the state of the world today.
Only by acknowledging that something went wrong, that we have lost our equilibrium, lost our balance, are we able to learn from our mistakes and discover the meaning for why they happened.
Only by assessing where we are currently located, are we then able to change direction. It is not that our world does not work due to our past, but rather because of our lack of being present.
Our life as a whole is in such disarray because we are unconscious of the desires, wants, drives and aspiration of the ego, which conflict with our intentions and commitments.

Women and Rumi’s Sacred Dance, Samaʾ By Zahra Taheri

Women and Rumi’s Sacred Dance, Samaʾ By Zahra Taheri

Rumi is among those mystics in the history of Sufism who believed in the sacredness of music and poetry, therefore music and poetry were at the heart of his spiritual practice (see p. 47). His inclination toward the sacred dance, samaʾ is generally considered to be the result of Shams-i Tabrizi’s teachings. Sultan Valad, however, relates a different account indicating that a woman played a significant role in encouraging Rumi to the practice of samaʾ before Shams-i Tabrizi’s arrival in Konya. As one of the loyal murids of Bahaʾ Valad and highly respected by him,33 this woman, namely the wife of Khaja Sharaf al-Din Samarqandi, after the death of her husband emigrated with his master’s family from Khorasan to Anatolia. She married her daughter, Gowhar Khatun, to young Rumi in Larandeh, and later came to be known as the ‘Great Kera’ in Rumi’s family. Aflaki directly quotes from Sultan Valad who considered her grandmother to be Rumi’s first samaʾ teacher:

Before the appearance (arrival) of Shams, my grandmother Kera-ye Bozorg taught my father how to perform the sacred dance (samaʾ) in the movement of his hands, and thereafter Shams taught my father to dance in the movement of his feet.34
This woman is believed to be the first to plant the joy of dancing in the garden of Rumi’s mind.

Rumi’s belief in the sanctity of music had a great impact on his behaviour towards, and respect for, musicians including women musicians. His view of women musicians went beyond the commonly held beliefs and prejudices of religious scholars, and even the religious law, since music was not considered unlawful in his teachings. He believed that the sound of music is equal to the evening prayer in the sense that both call people to the Truth; the prayer calls one’s outer self to the service (presence) of God, and the music calls the inner self to love and knowledge.35

He described the state of the men of God as a state of deadly thirst which has no cure other than being quenched with the water of music and dance.36 Rumi’s meeting with a female musician and singer named Tavus Khatun, who was residing with her concubines in Ziyaʾ al-Din Vazir’s caravanserai in Konya indicates that he was respectful of women musician’s gift and skill. Accepting Tavus Khatun’s invitation, Rumi entered her room and after saying his prayer there, blessed the woman with a piece of his turban.37

There are also several accounts in Manaqeb al-ʿArefin indicating that Rumi’s female murids, particularly the above mentioned circle of royal women, had gatherings every Friday night and invited him for preaching and samaʾ. In these gatherings which usually took place in Shaykh-i Kavatin’s residence, after Rumi’s sermons on the meanings and mysteries of the path, women musicians played reed and tambourine for the samaʾ performed in his presence.38 It should be mentioned here that it was common for noble families in Anatolia to have skillful slave girl musicians and singers in their houses. 39

While, as mentioned in Nizam Khatun’s case, women were allowed to arrange the samaʾ ceremony for Rumi and his murids in their houses, their participation in the samaʾ ceremony, and sometimes even their presence, was not allowed by other Sufis contemporary to Rumi. Awhad al-Din Kermani, a renowned contemporary of Rumi, once performed a samaʾ ceremony in Konya and strongly objected to the presence of a group of women who had performed the sacred dance in a separate section of the khaneqah, and expressed disrespect toward them. 40

BabAziz :

Α quotation from the film Bab'Aziz (2005) - Απόσπασμα από την ταινία Bab'Aziz (2005)

Α quotation from the film Bab'Aziz (2005)

That is a dialogue, while Bab'Aziz meets a young man who is singing, walking and searching for the right path to reach the gathering of Sufi.

-Where will the gathering take place?
-I don't know, even grandparent doesn't know.
Besides, nobody must know.
-How will you get there?
-Just walking, on foot.
-But if we get lost, what will happen?
-The one who has faith never gets lost.
Each uses his most precious gift in order not to get lost.
For you that gift is your voice.
Sing, my son and the path will appear.
- Oh day, dawn! People are dancing ...
The souls are dancing in ecstasy.
I will whisper in your ear where the dance leads them.

My comments :
The inner symbolism of the gathering of the Sufi is nothing else but a symbol of souls' return in their primary source.
The completion of this long internal process of purification at a particular moment leads the pupil to an exit from this field of life in which physical death then is only a positive possibility.
Even if we experience this path consciously the final goal is unknown because it refers to a higher reality.

Nevertheless, the concept of faith which leads the seeker is not blind or just a simple certainty that cannot be explained, it is the result of a new perception and revelatory knowledge, as well as the culmination of all the qualities and talents of the renewed soul seeker.
This symbolically refers to the song as ''the new day'' in which the joy of the ecstasy of sacred dance as a glorious celebration leads us to this revelation through which the secrets words are whispered to us.

I am an atom;
you are like the countenance of the Sun for me.
I am a patient of Love
you are like medicine for me.
Without wings, without feathers,
I fly about looking for you.
I have become a rose petal
and you are like the wind for me.
Take me for a ride.

Rumi

Πού θα γίνει η συγκέντρωση;
Και πώς θα φτάσετε εκεί;
Αλλά τι θα γίνει αν χαθούμε;

John Renard - The A to Z of Sufism

John Renard - The A to Z of Sufism
The Scarecrow Press, Inc. Lanham • Toronto • Plymouth, UK 2009
Editor’s Foreword

Sufism, a term derived from the woolen garments of early ascetics, may not be the most exact expression to cover the mystical movements within Islam, but it is the best we have. And it would be hard to come up with another that is more precise, because the phenomenon itself has taken on such a variety of forms during the 1,200 or so years it has already existed. Under this heading come many different orders, established at many different times and in many different places, by many different spiritual directors. They did not always agree on all points—indeed, they occasionally quarreled and certainly rivaled one another—and this is still valid today. But their ultimate goals were the same, and they drew inspiration from the same holy Qur’an and the awesome figure of the Prophet Muhammad. It is this diversity that often confuses outsiders, and it is this diversity that makes a work of this sort so useful, since rather than trying to impose uniformity and order where none exist it can show the impressive variety of origins, structures and organizations, rules and creeds, and practices and concepts. It can also delve into the cultural wealth of art, music, dance, and literature.

This is facilitated by the format of a historical dictionary. First, the chronology traces the long and venerable list of spiritual directors, poets and philosophers, and also political leaders who created and enriched the movement. Then, the introduction, vital given the diversity, can bring the salient aspects together in a broad and ordered whole. But it is the dictionary that again allows a multitude of aspects, persons, places, events, institutions, and concepts to be considered individually. Since terminology is so important, and virtually all of it is in Arabic, Persian, and other languages unfamiliar to most English speakers, the glossary is particularly precious. For those who want to take the study of Sufism further, and there will be more and more with time, the bibliography points to other sources of information.

The A to Z of Sufism was written by John Renard, an eminent student and teacher of the subject. His doctoral dissertation dealt with the renowned Sufi Rumı, and since then he has written a dozen books, mostly on Islam and Sufism. Since 1978, he has been teaching at the Department of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University.
He is well aware of the diversity and variety, and, if anything, appreciates it, and over the past quarter century of writing and teaching he has become accustomed to explaining the many twists and turns, the highways and also the byways, the theological and legal aspects, and the rich culture that has grown up around it. Since Dr. Renard deals not only with scholars and initiates but also students and outsiders, he knows how to present Sufism to a more general public as well. So let us take advantage.
Jon Woronoff Series Editor

SOUL.Ahuman faculty (generally referred to by the Arabic term nafs) whose status and function varies according to context. According to the Qur’a¯n, the nafs can function as an obstreperous ego (an-nafs alamma¯ra, the overweening soul) with its selfish and even downright evil designs that contend with spirit for the attentions of the heart. In that role, the soul stands as the prime enemy against which the seeker must struggle.
It can also act as a moral compass, calling the individual to act justly; an-nafs al-lawwa¯ma, the blaming soul, is akin to conscience. There is also the tranquil soul, an-nafs almut ma’inna, representing a condition occurring in the presence of God. The various aspects of soul each suggest different features of the Sufi psychological analysis of spiritual experience.
