Beethoven – Piano Concertos No.1 & 2 – Arrau, Davis
Notes and Editorial Reviews
A quarter of a century on, Arrau's mastery is pretty well undimmed. If anything, the articulation, as befits the digital age, is even cleaner... This kind of sensitive and considered playing is always likely to be at a premium.
"...Trevor Harvey described Arrau's earlier Philips recording of the C major Concerto as a performance in a thousand: 'Arrau plays the concerto to perfection and it sounds as fresh as new paint.' A quarter of a century on, Arrau's mastery is pretty well undimmed. If anything, the articulation, as befits the digital age, is even cleaner. Certainly, Arrau has lost none of his ability to release one of Beethoven's transforming trills with perfectly graded tone, timing and dynamic range...
The support provided by the Staatskapelle Dresden is first rate: by turns, trenchant and urbane... The kind of sensitive and considered playing we have from musicians like Arrau is always likely to be at a premium."
